Young girl attacked by unprovoked dog in New York

April 9th, 2013 • dog bites

Dogs might be considered man's best friend, but for victims of dog attacks, dogs feel more like the stuff that nightmares are made of rather than the stuff that best friends are made of. Most often it is young children that are the victims of vicious dog attacks in New York. These defenseless children are vulnerable to serious injury or worse, and often in instances where an animal is not provoked.

Readers may have heard about the terrible dog attack that was caught on surveillance very recently in the Bronx. The 6-year-old girl was walking with her grandmother when a dog wandered around the corner and attacked the small girl, completely unprovoked. A witness that assisted in pulling the animal off of the victim says that the girl was terrified and hysterical.

Luckily this girl only suffered minor injuries, and she was released from the hospital later the same day. However, the emotional trauma will likely linger long after this child's puncture wounds heal.

There are certain responsibilities that dog owners carry in New York by way of preventing injury to victims. The owner of this dog was cited for failing to keep the dog on a leash, but that was the extent of the summons against him. In similar instances, there can be financial compensation available for the medical expenses and the suffering caused by a dog attack.

There are very specific and often complicated laws that surround dog bites in New York. It is critical that in pursuing compensation following a similar event, a victim seeks the experience of a legal attorney well versed in handling cases of animal attacks.
